Warning! Too Much of This Hormone May Cause Damage

One of the things we do at our office at Robinhood Integrative Health is help people manage their hormone levels.

We do that by giving people bioidentical hormones to help them correct their deficiencies.

A majority of Americans, especially those over the age of 50, experience hormone deficiencies due to various reasons. The primary reason is the influence of age on hormone production. However, environmental factors, stress, diet and other nuances will cause hormone levels to fall.

Now here’s the interesting thing.

While the majority of the work I do with hormones is helping to increase hormone levels, there are a few times where I have to help prevent hormone levels from becoming too high.

And one of the hormones I try to bring down is estrogen.

Too much estrogen is called estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance is a real problem and I’d like to show you how I help control it.

Estrogen Dominance May Cause Severe Damage

Estrogen is a sex hormone.

While it is present in small amounts in males, it’s the primary sex hormone in females.

For women, estrogen is the hormone that helps to establish sexual development, sexual function, and is essential in influencing dozens of other processes (including bone formation, fat storage, influencing insulin sensitivity and more.)

While estrogen is critical for total health, if levels climb too high it may lead to a host of issues that could lead to health decline.

Estrogen dominance is most simply defined as higher levels of estrogen in relation to other sex hormones.

There isn’t necessarily a set level to define “too much estrogen.”

Estrogen dominance is becoming a worsening problem because women all over the nation are exposed to various factors that cause estrogen levels to soar.

One of my colleagues and a leader in integrative health, Amy Myers, said this about sky-rocketing estrogen levels.

[Estrogen levels are higher than normal because] “We are being constantly bombarded by xenoestrogens (industrial chemicals that mimic the behavior of estrogens) in our modern environment.”

They’re everywhere–in our food, personal care products, furniture and clothes. From the water we drink to the food we eat, you encounter a shocking number of these endocrine-disrupting xenoestrogens in the course of a day, without even knowing it.”

This is one reason I’m passionate in my recommendations for purging your home of toxic cleaning products

There are other factors that influence estrogen dominance. As mentioned earlier, age is a big factor. Not to mention other health conditions can influence estrogen levels and even inborn genetic mutations are going to induce estrogen dominance.

All that to be said, if estrogen dominance is an issue for you it’s important you get it under control.

If you’re wondering if you suffer from estrogen dominance, but aren’t quite sure, let me give you a list of tell-tale signs that might indicate estrogen dominance is something you need to correct.

A Few Signs Estrogen Dominance May Be a Problem For You

First things first, I’d be remiss to tell you the most accurate way to assess estrogen levels is to get lab work done that compares estrogen levels to other hormone levels.

However, you don’t want to needlessly have lab work done if you don’t have to.

Which is why I’d like to supply you with a list of signs that indicate you may be dealing with issues related to estrogen dominance.

For women, the following issues/signs, could indicate a problem with estrogen dominance:

  • Insomnia
  • PMS
  • Nervousness/irritableness
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Feeling like you have “the blue”
  • Low libido
  • Tenderness of the breasts
  • General fatigue
  • Erratic mood shifts
  • Abnormal menstruation
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Brain fog

For men, the symptoms are less pronounced and fewer

  • Enlarged breasts (gynecomastia or man boobs)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Infertility

If you’re a man or a woman who can pick a few of these symptoms off this list there’s a strong chance estrogen dominance is an issue for you.

To find out for sure, the #1 thing to do is what I recommended above. Have your physician get some lab work ordered to assess estrogen level dominance in relation to your other hormones.

If you don’t want to get blood work done and want to see if you can get these symptoms under control on your own, follow some of the steps I’ll list below.

Please note, estrogen dominance is not a disease.

It is a symptom of hormonal imbalance. And the good news is there are simple, do-it-yourself methods you can use to bring estrogen levels down.

If you follow these recommendations and the symptoms subside there’s a good chance excess estrogen was interfering with your health.

4 Ways to Improve Estrogen Levels Naturally

Fortunately for you, improving estrogen levels on your own doesn’t require a prescription.

Well, in worst-case scenarios it may.

However, I’ve helped plenty of patients keep their estrogen levels healthy by telling patients to do the following.

1 - Drink clean water: Easily one of the best things you can do to fight estrogen dominance is to drink highly purified water. Because standard drinking waters are filled with xenoestrogens (chemicals that imitate estrogen) I recommend drinking purified water.

And I’m not talking about drinking out of a Brita.

Instead, you want to drink water purified by reverse osmosis.

Reverse osmosis removes all chemical compounds from water. On the other hand, it also strips water of essential minerals so if you do drink reverse osmosis be sure to add an electrolyte compound into your diet.

2 - Eat clean food:  Be sure to remove foods known to contain hidden estrogens or xenoestrogens.

Foods you should get rid of are conventional meat, conventional dairy products, as well as non-organic produce. The reason these are dangerous is they all contain hormones, pesticides, and fertilizers that influence estrogen production.

If that’s not an easy thing to change I recommend looking at the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list for the worst offenders.

3 - Use natural beauty and cleaning products: At home you should only use cleaning products with plant-based cleaning compounds. The same is true of beauty products.

Chemicals absorbed through the skin can hijack estrogen production and may cause estrogen dominance.

   Finally Take Estrogen Control

In my clinical experience one of the quickest ways to improve estrogen levels is with a product called Estrogen Control.

Estrogen Control is a blend of 4 nutrients shown in various clinical trials to help improve estrogen levels.

Estrogen Control contains DIM, Kudzu, Iodine and Selenium.

Here’s how those all work to improve estrogen levels.

DIM.

DIM is the abbreviation for diindolylmethane, a plant-based compound you’d normally get by eating cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc).

John Biggs BSc, NCP, OHP writes this about how DIM helps control estrogen.

“DIM can definitely help prevent or reverse estrogen dominance, and support hormone balance by encouraging production of "friendly" estrogen metabolites with a much gentler, less pronounced estrogenic effect, (termed 2-OH-estrogens).

At the same time, DIM reduces production of the much more potent, proliferative, and inflammatory estrogens, i.e. 16-OH estrogens, and 4-OH estrogens. The reactive 16-OH estrogen metabolites, (i.e. the "undesirable" ones), can exert up to 10x the level of estrogenic influence as the "friendly" 2-OH metabolites.

And the 4-OH variety of metabolite can be really nasty. It can cause what are called DNA adducts that bind to your genes, raise inflammation, and can cause offramp, uncontrolled mutations and divisions in cells.”

Kudzu:

Kudzu is quite common around my office in North Carolina. A climbing vine, it takes over entire plots of land in a very short time.

Fortunately kudzu is also wonderful for helping to control estrogen.

Kudzu has phytoestrogen qualities (plant-based estrogen qualities) which have been shown useful in regulating your body’s own supply of estrogen.

Phytoestrogens like kudzu, bind to estrogen receptors, but have 1/100th of the effects of your body’s own estrogen. When they’re bound to those receptors it means that your body’s own estrogen doesn’t get picked up by the receptors which prevents estrogen from exerting its full effect on your body.

A study published in the Journal Agricultural Food Chemicals noted Studies indicate Kudzu has some of the most powerful phytoestrogen effects observed, which make it ideal for handling estrogen dominance.

Iodine:

Iodine is an essential mineral most commonly knows for how it helps to regulate thyroid health.

But iodine also plays a role in governing estrogen production. According to Dr. Brownstein, the way iodine helps to regulate estrogen dominance is by increasing how progesterone (a form of estrogen) bonds to receptor sites.

When iodine deficiency is present, it leads to more estrogen linking up to receptor sites and less progesterone hooking up to those sites. When iodine levels are normalized, estrogen levels fall as more progesterone bonds to receptor sites.

Thus helping to alleviate estrogen dominance

Selenium:

To avoid estrogen dominance your liver needs to function at 100%. This is because your liver plays a vital role in helping to clear estrogen from the body. This is why you need to make sure your selenium levels are up to the task.

Selenium influences how well your liver clears estrogen from your bloodstream. When selenium levels are in the healthy range it means your body can break down estrogen into various compounds that can be voided from the body and prevent estrogen dominance.

P.S.  DIM Supplement Warnings Could

DIM is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for children, or for cancer patients. DIM can possibly worsen hormone-sensitive conditions (such as breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer). It also isn’t recommended for those with kidney disease. If you have a hormone-related condition, make sure to discuss DIM with your doctor, because it can sometimes block estrogen activity. Taking larger doses can be unsafe; possible side effects of using DIM supplements include headaches and nausea.
