Shilajit
Shilajit, the words looks like it should be a swear word. Or, it looks like it was made up by a monkey pounding on a keyboard.
Well, neither of those are true.
Shilajit is actually a tar-like compound that is formed by the breakdown of plant-substances trapped in the earth.
In fact, it actually oozes from rocks as the pressure of the trapped shilajit causes it to pop through fissure in rock surfaces in the Himalayan mountains.
It’s almost like oil, but different in that it’s safe to ingest.
And different in that it’s also good for you.
Shilajit is a popular item in ayurvedic medicine and has been part of their treatment regimens for thousands of years.
The ayurvedic practitioners who employed it called it "the destroyer of weakness,” and used it for supporting the immune system, enhancing energy and stamina, helping to keep testosterone levels in men level as well as supporting how your body responds to inflammation.
If you want to see something that comes from rocks in the Himalayas that resembles oil in form and origin then you ought to see this.
The Science Behind Shilajit's Health Supporting Properties
Just because something was used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily good for you.
Fortunately, that isn’t the case with shilajit.
There’s a bit of evidence showing that shilajit can help to augment several areas of your health.
Most of what we know comes from animal studies, but there are human as well as anecdotal studies that support its continued use for improving energy levels and more.
Allow me to go through what I believe are the reasons to use shilajit on a regular basis.
1 - May Lead to a Better Brain:
Your brain is the control center of the body, and if you want to maintain great health for the years to come, you want your brain to be in great shape.
Shilajit might be able to keep your brain as healthy as possible for the length of your life.
The reason why is shilajit has a compound in it called fulvic acid.
Fulvic acid plays a role in affecting cognition because it can help to prevent a protein called “tau” from accumulating in your brain. While we need tau protein in order to maintain a healthy nervous system, if you have too much in your brain it may lead to future damage.
Thus, creating a healthy environment for creating optimal brain health.
2 - Helps to Support Healthy Testosterone Levels:
Men who want to maintain their health need sustained testosterone levels for as long as possible.
Mind you, there is no miracle supplement that is going to help to eliminate the gradual decline in testosterone as we age.
But, we can absolutely reduce the amount of testosterone lost as we age.
In a study published in Andrologia, it was discovered that when Shilajit was put to the test against a placebo it helped to support higher testosterone levels.
In the study men aged 45-55 were given either 250mg of shilajit 2x daily or a placebo. After 3 months the men who were taking it were shown to have had a significantly higher testosterone level compared to the placebo group.
3 - Could Help Ease Male Fertility Issues:
Shilajit is also a safe supplement for males who want to help support their fertility.
In another study by Andrologia of 60 men who were concerned about their fertility when men took shilajit 2x day for 90 days after meals they discovered some positive reactions in their sperm count and motility.
And it wasn’t a small finding either. In the study, a full 60% of the men tested showed an increase in total sperm count. And 12% of them saw their sperm motility increase.
4 - Helps to Reverse the Signs Of Aging:
There is no way to stop aging, yet.
However, there are ways to help reverse the signs of aging, and/or, to halt the damage. And Shilajit may be one of those.
As Healthline writes:
Since shilajit is rich in fulvic acid, a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it may also protect against free radicals and cellular damage. As a result, regular use of shilajit may contribute to longevity, a slower aging process, and overall better health.
5 - May Help Boost Energy Levels:
Another hallmark of shilajit’s benefits is how it can help to enhance mitochondrial function.
As I’ve written before, anything you can do to enhance how your mitochondria function is going to benefit you not only from a holistic sense, but from an energy-production standpoint.
Mitochondria beg for all the support they can get, and shilajit can positively influence how your cells create energy for your body to use.
Science Direct says this about shilajit and its ability to influence how your mitochondria produce ATP.
“Animal and human studies support its use as a “revitalizer,” promoting physical and mental energy, enhancing physical performance, and relieving fatigue in association with enhanced adenosine triphosphate production.”
The journal Science of the Total Environment confirmed this as far back as 1987. They write that when rats were given shilajit it helped the mitochondria work more efficiently which can have positive effects on energy levels.
Shilajit Is Nature’s Gift - Now We Can Get It to You for Daily Use
It’s amazing how many things we can take directly from nature to help support our health.
