This Calming Balm Isn’t Just For Children

Like most people, I don’t think many of you would say it’s a bad idea to make health products that protect our children.

While medical technology has come a long way in the past 100 years, not everything we give to children is good for them.

Whether we’re talking about the foods they eat, i.e. sugar-laden foods that promote obesity, or, we’re talking about medications for children that are purposefully filled with preservatives, artificial colors and outright dangerous ingredients, plenty of things our kids get are horrible for their developing bodies.

As an integrative-health MD, I generally only work with adults.

But, as a father of two young boys, I think constantly about what I give my children and how it affects their development.

This is why my wife and I started a company called Raise Them Well. All of the products for Raise Them Well are made with children’s health in mind.

However, just because these products are made for kids, that doesn’t mean they’re not appropriate for adults to use.

In fact, a few of them are especially useful for adults.

Take for instance our Calming Magnesium Oil Roll-On.

This topical roll-on oil delivers a potent blend of clinically-tested calming agents that children as well as adults can use to produce feelings of relaxation and to cut help cut the tensions during stressful days.

Why Doctors Recommend The Ingredients In Our Calming Magnesium Oil Roll-On Balm

When Emily and I created this roll-on oil for children, we knew that we needed to include natural-substances that were shown in clinical settings to help produce a sense of calm and relaxation.

But here’s the kicker.

We had to be sure these ingredients were REALLY strong.

Because children have a much harder time regulating their emotions than adults, we needed to add ingredients that would help small children with stress and aggravation.

Since these ingredients are good at helping kids downregulate their anxiousness, they’re perfect for adults, too.

Here’s what we’ve included in the calming magnesium oil roll-on balm.

1 - Magnesium Oil:

When it comes to natural substances that have an intense effect on stress, magnesium is a powerhouse.

In fact, it’s my #1 recommended supplement for stress relief.

The reasons I recommend it are simple. Firstly, our dietary intake of magnesium is falling as food becomes less nutritious. And the second is because there are hundreds of studies showing that magnesium is essential for total health, and mental health in particular.

Magnesium does a few things to help promote feelings of calmness.

When magnesium makes its way into the body, it stimulates GABA receptors, which is needed to help you feel calm.

GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which means it calms down an overly-stimulated mind and the neurotransmitters that can cause stress/anxiety. If you don’t have enough GABA, neurotransmitters tend to move around frantically in your brain so it feels almost impossible to relax.

Secondly, magnesium can help balance out how stress hormones like cortisol affect your body.

Magnesium has been shown to keep excess cortisol production under control and also prevents too much it from entering the brain. Both of these mechanistic actions are helpful at promoting feelings of relaxation and peace.

In addition to that, magnesium also helps to keep blood sugar under control while promoting a healthy response to inflammation.

The reason we put magnesium oil in this balm is because when you rub it onto your skin it provides a quick infusion of magnesium that helps with stress. Taking magnesium orally doesn’t give you a “quick fix” because it takes a while to digest. Topical applications of magnesium get magnesium into your body tissue fast, which is helpful for rapid stress relief.

2 -  Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Chamomile is a well-known and ancient substance. People have been using it for thousands of years to help induce deep sleep and to help promote a deep-sense of relaxation.

Recent research indicates that the concentrated extract of chamomile can help to promote stress relief in individuals.

Several researchers published a comprehensive review of chamomile in the journal Molecular Medicine Reports showing how effective chamomile is for stress reduction.

The authors wrote, “Chamomile is widely regarded as a mild tranquilizer and sleep-inducer. Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain.

Studies in preclinical models have shown anticonvulsant and CNS depressant effects respectively. Clinical trials are notable for their absence, although ten cardiac patients are reported to have immediately fallen into a deep sleep lasting for 90 minutes after drinking chamomile tea.

Chamomile extracts exhibit benzodiazepine-like hypnotic activity.”

What does that mean for you?

If you’re feeling a bit aggravated, or spun up, chamomile can help bring you down from feeling so uppity.

If you’ve ever tried to calm down in moments of stress and found that to be almost impossible, part of that is because your body is releasing tons of hormones and neurotransmitters all at once.

Unless you know how to calm down internally (with breathing or meditative techniques) it can be hard to capture all that nervous energy and reel it back in.

Chamomile has an effect similar to alcohol, that depresses your body’s stress response to help you calm down quickly.

In fact, it’s so effective at producing feelings of peace and tranquility that just smelling chamomile can help with stress.

In 2013 researchers published a study in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showing that people who were suffering from temporary feelings of anxiousness slept better and felt less anxiety than others who were subjected to conventional nursing intervention when nurses gave them chamomile in an aromatherapy application.

3 - Lavender

Lavender is another one of those substances that people have used for thousands of years for stress relief.

And the ancient-tradition is backed up by serious amounts of research.

The International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice published a study showing that when people took 80 mg of lavender essential oil (in capsules) it helped to boost several different aspects of mental health and also helped people sleep better.

Best of all is the researchers noted that taking lavender didn’t produce adverse side effects.

Another study followed on the heels of that previous study and proved very much the same thing. The study appeared in The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology and showed that people who needed supplemental support to help boost calmness and feelings of tranquility received that when taking lavender oil.

It’s also an impressive aromatherapy, like chamomile, so just smelling it can help to calm you down.
