More Than Just A Kitchen Spice

More Than Just A Kitchen Spice

Variety is the spice of life, and nowhere is that more true than when it comes to spices.

We like to think that a spice is just a spice, but when it comes to spices, the varieties that are presented to us can actually offer us multiple benefits.

A popular spice used in kitchens all over the world is basil.

What you may not know about basil is there are all kinds of variants of this herb, many of them that we don’t interact with much on a daily basis.

And one of those different species of basil has been clinically demonstrated to help alleviate stress.

It’s called Holy Basil, and Doctor Wiggy’s written about it several times on the blog.

If you’ve never heard of holy basil before you can likely guess where it got its name from. It does something amazing inside of the human body.

Holy basil is a miraculous herb that has the known ability to help people tame the ill effects of stress and also re-energize stressed our bodies. Dr. Wiggy believes in its power so much he’s included it as 1 of only 3 ingredients in our Adrenal Syn3rgy blend.

This supplement is wonderful at helping resist fatigue and holy basil is one of the main reasons you can take a capsule of Adrenal Syn3rgy and not feel run down and sluggish hours later.

And now, it’s time to see why Holy Basil is such a powerful herb to help guard against stress and fatigue.

How Holy Basil Helps Shed The Unwanted Effects Of Stress

People tend to underestimate how stress can affect our energy levels. The truth of the matter is stress is one of the leading factors behind fatigue.

Why does stress do that to us?

It’s simple.

When we work out hard or stay up late, what’s happening is the cellular structure of the body is being stressed as a signal to produce more energy so that we can keep going on about our day.

When minimal stress (of any kind) is around, then energy expenditures are low and we feel less energized.  When the amount of stress we experience is enhanced it causes us to expend more energy at the metabolic level so we can deal with stress.

Holy basil supports how your body responds to stress so that you don’t give up tons of energy responding directly to stress. This holds true no matter what kind of stress you’re dealing with (i,e.  Environmental, physiological, psychological, or emotional).

There are multiple ways that it does this. Mainly, it comes down to how Holy Basil regulates cortisol production. Cortisol is a hormone your body makes to help deal with stress. It’s healthy for your body to produce cortisol, but there comes a point where if you’re overly stressed, or stressed for an extended amount of time, that excessive cortisol can become an issue.

Holy basil acts on your endocrine system and helps regulate cortisol so it remains within the healthy and normal levels. Holy basil is classified as an adaptogen which means it can attenuate (reduce the force) of cortisol production in your body.

Scientific data supports holy basil use for stress relief and fighting fatigue. In 2014 researchers published a study in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, and wrote the following:

“Tulsi has also been shown to counter metabolic stress through normalization of blood glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels, and psychological stress through positive effects on memory and cognitive function and through its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties.”

And as Dr. Axe writes “Holy basil includes three phytochemical compounds that help achieve these results. The first two, ocimumosides A and B, have been identified as anti-stress compounds and may lower blood corticosterone (another stress hormone) and create positive alterations in the neurotransmitter system of the brain.

According to an article published in
Alternative and Complementary Therapies, the third, 4-allyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyronosyl-2-hydroxybenzene, is also able to lower stress parameters in lab studies.”

People have used holy basil for thousands of years to help feel great and now you can too when you incorporate it into your daily routine as part of an anti-stress, anti-fatigue campaign.
