Oil From This Popular Condiment Has Some Awesome Health Benefits
Out of all the food types in America, one of the most popular is pizza.
Every night, millions of Americans sit around eating slices of pizza pie.
I can see why they love it; the hot, stringy mozzarella, rich tomato sauce, spicy pepperonis and thick gooey dough are a masterpiece to enjoy.
Of course, I don't really enjoy eating traditional pizzas - all that gluten and dairy are a recipe for gut-wreck and some serious inflammation.
The interesting thing about pizza is one of the most popular condiments sprinkled over the top is actually a nutritional all-star.
It's not basil - although basil's definitely a stellar herb in its own right. You can see an article I wrote on basil right here.
It's actually oregano.
While oregano by itself is quite good for you, when you extract the essential oil from this popular condiment, you're provided with one of the most potent immune boosting materials on the planet.
This is why we swear by it in our office as a wonderful supplement.
Check out what it's been scientifically proven to do for you in regards to helping you stay healthy longer:
The Secret Ingredients To Oregano's Crazy Health Boosting Properties
Oregano is part of the mint family. For hundreds of years, it's been believed to help with a wide assortment of ailments. Though there are over 40 different species of oregano, the one that'll actually help protect your health is Origanum vulgare, which hails from the Mediterranean.
Oregano has been extensively tested, and it's been discovered two powerful polyphenols in oregano are what give it its health-protective benefits.
Oregano also contains phenols (natural phytochemical compounds with beneficial antioxidant effects); the two most abundant phenols in oregano are:
- Thymol
- Carvacrol
Oregano also includes other polyphenols which have been isolated and proven to work with your body to ward off invaders, help keep inflammation at bay, boost your immune system, and more.
These include:
- Terpenes
- Rosmarinic acid
- Naringin
- Beta-caryophyllene (E-BCP)
It's these compounds (and a few more) that allow us to confidently say using oregano oil to boost health is one of the most powerful plant-based therapies known to man.
Check out a few of the scientifically proven claims that have been made about oregano oil:
5 Benefits Associated With Oregano Oil
1 - It can fight staph infection:
Staph infections are some of the scarier infections known to man, and MRSA is one of the most dangerous of them all. You likely know it by a more common moniker...
Flesh-eating bacteria.
The good news is researchers have conducted several studies showing oregano oil's ability to halt these infections from growing. One study confidently demonstrated a dilution of oregano oil had no trouble eliminating the presence of this dangerous bacteria.
A researcher who helped head the study said, "The tests show that the oil kills MRSA both as a liquid and as a vapor, and its antimicrobial activity is not diminished by heating in boiling water,"
2 - It's been shown to be a cancer fighter:
Both carvacrol and rosmarinic acid are some of the most powerful polyphenols in oregano oil, and have been shown to keep aggressive cancers in check.
"Some data clearly demonstrate carvacrol's anti-tumor effect on human metastatic breast cancer cells. The research showed that carvacrol expedites cancer cell death. This shows great promise in using the compound for cancer treatment.
According to research by Dr. Supriya Bavadekar, assistant professor of pharmacology at Long Island University, carvacrol showed similar results when tested against human prostate cancer cells. 'We tested carvacrol in various concentrations and for different time periods against human prostate cancer cells and were excited to see the complete inhibition of cancer cells,' said Dr. Bavadekar"
3 - It's used to fight enterovirus 71:
In our office, we use oregano oil to help fight one of the more common viral infections among patients: enterovirus 71. You likely know enterovirus 71 by the hand, foot, and mouth diseases it causes.
Because oregano oil has known antiviral agents in the form of thymol and carvacrol, it's quite effective at keeping enterovirus 71 from overtaking the body's immune system. Numerous studies have also shown oregano oil is a very effective antiviral and so it can be used effectively against enterovirus 71 along with many of the more pervasive viruses you might have to deal with.
4 - It can be used to fight fungal infections:
Oregano oil is a very effective anti-fungal agent, and is powerful enough to replace name-brand prescriptions to keep yeast infections under control. In fact, this is probably the most potent and common use of oregano oil I can think of.
When diluted to the appropriate amount, oregano oil (when placed on the site of a fungal infection) can cause the infection to whither away and die in a hurry. You do have to be careful, though, as the direct placement of concentrated oregano oil on the skin can irritate it.
Oregano oil can also be taken internally for the treatment of yeast infections. However, it's important to dilute it; as a topical application I suggest 1 to 2 drops of oregano oil per teaspoon of a carrier oil (like coconut, olive, or jojoba). In regards to what the appropriate amount of dilution would be, I think it best to consult your physician to find the right mixture.
5 - It can help enhance the immune system:
As you've seen, the polyphenols found in oregano oil are quite effective at fighting bacteria, viruses, fungi and more. But it's not just the ability to fight these deadly invaders that makes it a great supplement...it's also how it works synergistically with the body's immune response to promote health, which is
Oregano oil is also a great support for the overall immune system. On top of that, we know rosmarinic acid is a powerful antioxidant capable of helping improve immune health - this is because of its strong antioxidant property. Oregano oil has such high concentrations of antioxidants, it's been heralded as one of the best sources of plant-based antioxidants on the planet.
One study said:
"…intake of herbs [including oregano] may…contribute significantly to the total intake of plant antioxidants, and be an even better source of dietary antioxidants than many other food groups such as fruits, berries, cereals, and vegetables."
This means if you take it with any amount of regularity (or when you're feeling like you're succumbing to a cold or a flu), you have the increased chance of remaining well or becoming well soon.
Warnings On Oregano Oil
I'd be remiss not to tell you about the warnings associated with oregano oil.
As I mentioned above, it is quite potent - so that means you've got to exercise care when using it either topically or internally.
Pregnant women should also exercise care when taking oregano oil. This is because it can cause blood to travel to the uterus, compromising the lining of the uterine wall and even inducing menstruation during pregnancy.
The other warning is to ensure you're getting the right kind of oregano oil.
Only purchase from trusted brands who are using the right species of oregano oil. Be sure to get a source guaranteed on both type and purity.
