Why Plantains are An Amazing Health Food

Ok, before I get too far into this article, let me admit that I acknowledge I have focused intently on the ketogenic diet over the past few years. So, for me to write on an extremely dense source of carbohydrates might be a departure from the normal. Let me couch this fact within this statement. Carbohydrates are not evil AND, when we use carbohydrates wisely we can benefit greatly from the energy and nutrition they provide. One of the best sources of carbohydrates is the plantain, or as I’ve heard it called, “bananas on steroids.” Plantains are not a ubiquitous food here in the States, and I think that’s a shame, as they’re one of the healthier foods around....

Is It Time to Give Up On Olive Oil?

Look, I’m not sorry...Not sorry that I’ve been advocating a high fat diet for the past few years. I’m not sorry that I keep talking about “keto” this, and “triglycerides” that.I’m not sorry that I try and get people to buy more oil than Jiffy Lube. At the end of the day, I believe eating copious amounts of healthy fat is absolutely essential for great health. And today, I’m going to focus on olive oil, an oil I’ve neglected to talk about recently.Olive oil is one of the world’s most celebrated foods. These 3 Powerful Food Extracts Keep You In Great Health

In just a second I’m going to show you 3 incredibly powerful (and common) food extracts you can start taking today to keep you in great health.   One of the beverages health professionals like myself are asked about frequently is coffee. Because coffee is a drug (well, caffeine is a drug) and it obviously has stimulatory properties, people can’t help but think it’s bad for you. Makes sense, right? If it makes your heart race and you can’t function without it then it’s got to be bad for you, right? Especially if you drink a lot of it through the day. Not so fast health conscious reader. The truth is because coffee is such a popular beverage (Americans drink 146 billion cups annually) it’s been the subject of a massive number of studies. In fact, It may be the most well-studied beverage on the planet, even more...

Good Plants

In this article I’d like to take a second to talk about plant-based foods. In particular, I’d like to talk about a specific form of plant-based nutrient that come from plant-base known as “phytonutrients.” As many of my younger patients know, phytonutrient is the name of one of the marvel superheroes from the new Marvel Avengers movie.   Ok, that was a bad joke. Forgive me, I’m tired with a toddler who doesn’t sleep through the night.  Anyways, I’ve referenced phytonutrients plenty before, but I don’t think many people understand what they are.   That’s not really surprising. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by everything you’re supposed to know about good health. Especially when it comes to healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.  You...
